Leo XIV: May Peace Reach the Hearts of All

The Message Brought by Pope Leo XIV, Elected on May 8, 2025

The message brought by Pope Leo XIV, elected on May 8, 2025, speaks of peace and hope, inspired by the greeting of the Risen Christ: “Peace be with you.” It echoed through the crowd with surprise and emotion.

His first words as Pope were directed to the whole world, expressing a desire for peace to reach every heart — a humble, disarmed, and divine peace. It recalled the fragile voice of Pope Francis, who blessed the world at Easter, reaffirming that God loves all and that evil will not prevail.

A Message of Peace and Continuity from Pope Leo XIV

The announcement of the white smoke brought joy and renewed expectations regarding the direction of the Catholic Church after Pope Francis. Would the legacy of change continue? The choice of the name Leo XIV suggests continuity with Pope Leo XIII (1878–1903), who marked his time with dialogue with the modern world without compromising doctrine.

Identifying himself as an Augustinian, he declared he would be a Christian among all and a bishop for all. He offered a special greeting to the Church of Rome and to his former diocese in Peru, expressing heartfelt gratitude. He made a heartfelt appeal for a synodal Church, close to those who suffer, and one that builds bridges through love and dialogue.

Leo XIII and Our Lady of Pompeii

“On the day of the supplication to Our Lady of Pompeii, our mother Mary always wants to walk with us, be near us, and help us through her intercession and her love.” With these words, Pope Leo XIV clearly referred to Pope Leo XIII, a known devotee of Our Lady of Pompeii.

By choosing a name with such historical and spiritual symbolism, he signals continuity in the Church’s social and pastoral mission. Yet, he also distinguishes himself from his predecessor, Pope Francis. The name evokes strength, courage, leadership, and possibly vigilance — qualities essential for a Pope committed to continuing reforms, engaging in dialogue with a complex world, and preserving the unity of the Church.

Additionally, invoking Mary, mother of Jesus, Pope Leo XIV asked for her intercession and invited all to pray for his new mission and for peace in the world.

By beginning the Hail Mary with the faithful, he symbolically set the tone for his pontificate — one marked by vibrant spirituality, communion, and hope. This gesture also recalls the message of Our Lady of Fatima, who, during her apparitions, pleaded for peace in the world and the conversion of hearts. Mary, as Mother of the Church and intercessor, continues to guide us along the path of peace, calling all to live reconciliation and fraternity, in accordance with the divine message she entrusted to the three shepherd children in 1917.

By invoking Mary, Pope Leo XIV not only reinforces the mission of peace and love, but also places himself within the long Marian tradition of trust in her intercession to build a more united and peaceful world.

Good Shepherd Sunday: A Symbol of the New Pontificate

On May 12, the eve of the apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima, the Church celebrates Good Shepherd Sunday — a day dedicated to Jesus as the one who cares for his sheep and lays down his life for them. The Pope, as the “universal shepherd” of the Catholic Church, is called to guide Christ’s flock — to protect, teach, and care for God’s people, just like the Good Shepherd.

With the election of Pope Leo XIV, this spiritual leadership role takes on new life. He is now called to offer guidance, wisdom, and care to Catholics around the globe. The Church welcomes this moment with faith and hope, trusting that, under God’s grace, he will truly be a “Good Shepherd” to all.

In Fatima, on May 13, we commemorate yet another anniversary of the Marian apparitions to the three shepherd children. We look forward to welcoming everyone!
